About FireDrake Exotics
My name is Sarah K Garrett and my husband is Gary Garrett, I am a Veterinary Technician in
Colorado Springs, CO.
Growing up I always had pets. I had pretty much every pet
rodent, rabbits, dogs, cats, birds, fish and even goats, ducks and
chickens. The rabbits I had the longest, I ended up breeding and showing
them and was fairly successful at it. But what I really wanted was a red
tail boa. I would see babies in pet stores and just drool over them.
I loved that silvery body with a red red tail. I vowed that as soon as I
could I would have one! It was later, in Vet tech school that I learned
that most red tails turn yellow or brown as they age. I was heart broken.
During my externship with an exotic pet Veterinarian, we saw a lady with two corn snakes. One was silver, and the other red. Now I think they must have been pewter and bloodred because neither had any saddles. But I was really taken with them. They were large enough to be hardy and noticeable, but small enough to be manageable. I wanted one! I began researching and saw a picture of an adult amelanistic corn. That was it, I wanted a fire colored snake.
I bought my first snake after I graduated college in 1999. It was a baby amelanistic corn snake that I still have to this day! I remember being so disappointed in that little white and pink worm. This was definitely not the fire colored snake I had seen on the website! With a little research I found that they change color dramatically, so with a little patience and a bunch of mice, soon I had that fire snake! That, as we all know, was the beginning of an addiction there seems to be no cure for. Soon I had a luecistic Texas rat snake, then a Brazilian rainbow boa, then a bearded dragon, another corn snake, a ball python... the list goes on.
In 2003 I had a clutch of baby bearded dragons and FireDrake Exotics was born, only, it was FireDrake Herps then. At the time I was living in a one bedroom apartment that was kept warm by the heat lamps in the living room. In 2003 I bought a two bedroom condo and produced my first jungle corns. I became hooked on hybrid snakes. Unfortunately, a lot of the herp community is very much against hybrids and I found the market for what I had planned very small and decided to turn from that path.
In late 2004 I started dating Gary. He is an all around great guy who loves animals as much as I do and is as much of a nerd as I am. He soon joined the family and fell in love with leopard geckos. I never had any interest in them before Gary started looking into them. I traded a bunch of bearded dragons for a group of hypo leos, and I was hooked too. I love their bumpy skin and fat squishy tails!
Gary puts up with a lot; all my obsessions, addictions and eccentricities. He is definitely a keeper! And on December 8th 2006 we got engaged! We got married April 13th 2007 in a tiny private ceremony at the Clerks and Recorders office. We bought a 1500 square foot house with a basement in North Eastern Colorado Springs in July of 2007. One day we will finish the basement, I would like a completely separate, snake proof room to keep the reptiles in. The collection keeps on growing and my obcession with it has not decreased yet. My next goal is to buy or build larger enclosures for every single snake so they have more room to stretch out!
